We encourage you to take some time in prayer and conversation with your family to consider how God is calling you to give in 2025. Unsure how to do this? Prayerfully review our suggested process below.

How do I get started giving? How do I decide what to give?

Here’s a suggested process.
  1. Prayerfully consider all God has done for you, and all the ways that God has blessed your life. How has Medford UMC been a part of your / your family’s spiritual growth?
  2. Take some time to reflect (along with those closest to you) on generosity as taught by Jesus in Luke 6:38: “Give, and it will be given to you. A good portion—packed down, firmly shaken, and overflowing—will fall into your lap. The portion you give will determine the portion you receive in return.”
  3. If you’ve not been in the habit of giving, maybe start by considering what you spend in a typical month on things like discretionary items like: streaming services, dinners out, coffee, gym memberships, or your cell phone bill. What feels like a good place to start? Remember that every gift, in any amount, makes a difference.
  4. If you have been a regular giver, and you want to take a next step to think about giving as a spiritual discipline, begin by calculating what you give now as a proportion of your income. Christians have traditionally considered the tithe, or 10% of income, the standard for giving. Accounting for ALL your charitable gifts, where are you on that journey? What would it take to grow by a half-percent or more?
  5. If you want to prioritize giving in your budget, consider whether now might be the time to sign up for online recurring giving. There’s no better way to support your church and to make certain that giving comes first.
  6. Sit with your commitment for a few days. Pray over it. Talk through it with your family. If it feels good, then that’s where you begin. Complete either the paper estimate of giving or the online form, then sign up for online recurring giving or make a one-time gift. Thank you!

What are the various funds listed on my Estimate of Giving? Here are answers!

1. General Fund

The General Fund is the unrestricted operating fund that supports the mission and programs of our church, including the work of the United Methodist Church in NJ and around the world. It also provides for most of our church’s expenses, such as salaries & benefits, utilities, and administrative needs.

2. Building Fund

The Building Fund is a restricted fund managed by the Trustees that provides for maintenance and upkeep, as well as capital improvements, for the main church building, the Family Life Center, and the parsonage (pastor’s home).

3. Family Life Center Fund

The Family Life Center, built in 2017, has an outstanding mortgage of about $477,000. Donations to the Family Life Center Fund go exclusively to pay that mortgage, which is roughly $3000/month.
