2 The Lord’s messenger appeared to him in a flame of fire in the middle of a bush. Moses saw that the bush was in flames, but it didn’t burn up. 3 Then Moses said to himself, Let me check out this amazing sight and find out why the bush isn’t burning up.
4 When the Lord saw that he was coming to look, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!”
Moses said, “I’m here.”
5 Then the Lord said, “Don’t come any closer! Take off your sandals, because you are standing on holy ground.”
Reflection
Years ago we were faced with a monumental decision that would affect our entire family. We prayed continually over this decision but felt there was no clear guidance going forward. All the experts suggested that we do the opposite of what our hearts told us would be the best course of action.
The day of the decision we drove to the meeting to give our answer, feeling desperate, wondering if we were making the wrong decision. Suddenly a thunder-storm with gusting wind, lightening and driving rain hit us. It lasted about ten minutes and as it continued to rain, the sun came out and a double rainbow appeared-in February! We believed this was an amazing moment of divine holy grace, and it gave us a sense of blessing and peace about our decision and it’s outcome.
I think most of us have these moments where God meets us and we actually realize it in that very moment. Holding a newborn, seeing a tree ablaze with color or the Milky Way in the night sky, even a mountain top experience can fill us with awe and gratitude as we experience God’s love for us. These experiences remind us that we are God’s children, that God is with us and that every moment of our lives is a sacred opportunity to receive and share God’s love.

Maybe God isn’t going to give us double rainbows every day to get our attention, though in a way I think God does. God seeks us out, but we’re so busy at the daily grind we often miss these divine moments. Like Moses, God needs to get our attention, whether it’s a burning bush, a double rainbow, or an emergency room visit reminding us we need to slow down. It’s during these times, we actually wake up and look up and realize we’re experiencing a divine invitation. And like Moses, we need to put off our everyday shoes and step onto holy ground, into God’s presence so that we can experience God’s love and make space to listen to what God has to say to us.
Is God trying to get your attention? Today, look for those divine invitations from God, the opportunity to transcend the ordinary and experience God’s extraordinary love. Realize that God is with you and take off your everyday shoes, step onto holy ground, and listen to what God has to say to you.
Prayer: Holy God, you invite us to meet with you on holy ground and listen. Lord, wake us from our everyday ordinary to experience your extraordinary love so that we can share your love with others. Amen.
