Philippians 1:6 (CEB)

I’m sure about this: the one who started a good work in you will stay with you to complete the job by the day of Christ Jesus.

Reflection

Ordination paperwork is always due in person on the 1st of November. I had big dreams of finishing it before I left for Switzerland in early September, but that was but a dream. It’s a ton of writing and to answer the questions authentically takes a lot of emotional energy. Toward the end of October, I had colleagues gently remind me that if I wasn’t ready to hand it in, I could always apply again next year. “I’ve gotten this far, I’m handing in that paperwork!” The real version of that sentence probably included some more colorful words. I was going to complete it no matter what.

Sometimes I feel like my relationship with God has been similar to this. I meandered for 11 years after being called to ministry until I finally accepted that call. It was then another 4 years until I’d have any clarity in that calling. No matter which rabbit hole I wandered down, it was almost as if God was like, “That’s nice. It’s not what you’re ultimately going to do but have fun.” No matter my wandering, no matter my stubbornness (of which there is plenty), no matter how many times I turned my back on what God was asking of me – God was going to complete the job.

And this is all coming from someone at the beginning of her career in ministry! I can only imagine reading what I’ve shared with you today in 60 years. Future me would probably laugh – that work is nowhere near complete, just wait! When I feel like it’s tough to see what’s ahead, that I don’t know if what I’m doing is what I’m supposed to be doing, I find comfort in these words that God started this work and will stay with me until it’s done.

Have you ever experienced the Holy Spirit pulling you in a direction? What was that like? What came of it?

Prayer: Holy God, we know that you have created us each as unique individuals who can make an impact in others lives. When we get lost on that journey, give us clarity. Help lead us to the work of your kingdom. Stay with us until the job is complete. Amen.
