Psalm 118:24

This is the day that the Lord has made;
    let us rejoice and be glad in it. (NRSV)

This is the day the Lord acted;
    we will rejoice and celebrate in it! (CEB)

Reflection

Starting the day with a walk outside, no matter what the weather, is a beautiful way to connect with our Creator. Taking a deep breath and celebrating that “this is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it” reminds us that God is in charge and together we can handle whatever the day sends our way. It’s a perfect way to live in “the now.”

I try to get out every morning for a 30 minute walk with our dog because I know the rest of my day will be better for both of us. Riley craves that walk because it means he has the possibility of greeting people with his exuberant tail wag and smile. He can spot people he knows and they can see his recognition when they’re still far down the road. I believe Riley looks at people as his “god” because he gets everything he needs from them: unconditional love and attention (and the occasional treat). On mornings when we don’t see any people he goes home with his head and tail down as if he’s depressed.

For Pondering & Prayer

It’s easy to take a walk when the sun is shining. I encourage you to put on your raincoat and grab your umbrella the next day it’s raining and proclaim “THIS is the day the Lord has made!” God is with us no matter the weather, no matter what life throws at us. Together we can get through it!

Pray for all God’s creatures who begin each new day with exuberance and a song, living in “the now” with joy.
