2 Timothy 3:16-17 (CEB)

16 Every scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for showing mistakes, for correcting, and for training character, 17 so that the person who belongs to God can be equipped to do everything that is good.

Reflection

What makes the Bible special? Why does it matter?

This passage begins to describe God’s intention in giving us this gift. Too often, we approach the scriptures as letters on a page: lifeless & boring, old stories from long ago.

But that was never the intention at all. The intention in God’s giving us these stories, these words, wasn’t to bore us. It wasn’t to constrain us. It wasn’t to condemn us. It’s to set us free to serve God in the ways Christ intended for us. It’s to give us the tools we need – to equip us – to help others. These aren’t lifeless letters. They are our story.

It’s a mirror in which we see ourselves and a canvas upon which the Spirit paints a vision for the world. Those who belong to God find in the Bible the tools we need to live into our calling as followers of Jesus.
