Tue Mar 24-God Is Steady. Are We?

Psalm 107:25-30 (CEB)

25 God spoke and stirred up a storm
    that brought the waves up high.
26 The waves went as high as the sky;
    they crashed down to the depths.
The sailors’ courage melted at this terrible situation.
27     They staggered and stumbled around like they were drunk.
    None of their skill was of any help.
28 So they cried out to the Lord in their distress,
    and God brought them out safe from their desperate circumstances.
29 God quieted the storm to a whisper;
    the sea’s waves were hushed.
30 So they rejoiced because the waves had calmed down;
    then God led them to the harbor they were hoping for.

Reflection

As I read Psalm 107, one clear theme stands out: God is steady. Even when we are not.

Throughout this psalm, we see a pattern; people wander, struggle, and find themselves overwhelmed. Yet each time they cry out, God responds. God does not waver. God does not abandon. God remains constant, ready to rescue, restore, and guide.

In contrast, we can be inconsistent. We often drift between dependence on God and dependence on ourselves. When life is going well, it’s easy to feel self-sufficient, to believe our success is the result of our own effort. But in doing so, we slowly begin to shift God away from the center of our lives.

Then the storms come. At these times, like the sailors described in this passage, we can find ourselves overwhelmed, our courage melting away, feeling disoriented and out of control. In those moments, we are reminded of a truth we may have forgotten; we were never meant to navigate life on our own.

The good news is this, God’s steadiness does not depend on ours.

When we cry out to God, God hears us. God calms the storm. God brings peace in the chaos and leads us back to safety. Not because we earned it, but because of God’s steadfast love.

So, the question becomes, will we learn from this pattern?

Will we choose to remain anchored in God, not just during the storms, but in the calm?

Let us strive to keep God at the center of our lives daily, not just when we are in need. Let us recognize our constant dependence on God and give thanks for God’s unwavering love and faithfulness.

For Pondering and Prayer

  • How do you recognize God’s steadfast love in our lives?
  • Have you ever experienced a time when you drifted from God and felt life become unsettled or out of control?

Prayer: Steadfast God, thank You for Your constant presence, Your grace, and Your peace.
Help us to remember that above all else, we need You. Keep our hearts anchored in You, not just in times of trouble, but in every moment. Teach us to live in a way that honors You and reflects Your love. May our lives be a pleasing offering to You. In the beautiful name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
