4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.
5 May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, 6 so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
7 Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.
Reflection
Unfortunately, a source of stress for many during the holiday season is gathering with family members we do not see regularly. Family dynamics can be complicated. There may be people we love but don’t necessarily enjoy spending time with. Differences in politics, life choices, or values can easily turn conversations into arguments. Sometimes offhand or insensitive remarks leave us feeling hurt or disrespected. Because of this, holiday gatherings can feel more overwhelming than joyful.
If you are feeling anxious about an upcoming family gathering, I think today’s Scripture offers hope and encouragement. Throughout his life, Jesus was belittled, ridiculed, and misunderstood—treatment that ultimately led to his crucifixion. Hopefully, none of our family disagreements reach that level! Yet despite the insults and rejection he endured, Jesus continued to love those who opposed him, disagreed with him, and even hated him.
Jesus shows us that every person—regardless of opinions, political beliefs, background, or appearance—is a child of God. When we choose to welcome one another, even in the midst of disagreement, we reflect Christ’s attitude. In doing so, we glorify God.
So, if you are tempted to avoid a holiday gathering or distance yourself from a difficult family member, allow God’s Word to give you endurance and encouragement. Consider ways to remain present, to listen, and to seek common ground. Look for opportunities to encourage rather than argue. When we welcome one another as Christ has welcomed us, we honor God, who lovingly welcomes all of us as beloved children.

For Pondering and Prayer
- Are there family members you dread seeing? Have you avoided gatherings because of fear or tension?
- Are there ways you can find common ground with those you disagree with, so you can remain welcoming and supportive?
Prayer: God of all grace and love, your desire is for all your children to experience love, peace, and community. When relationships are difficult and tensions run high, fill us with your compassion. Help us remember that even those we struggle with are your beloved children. Give us endurance, patience, and grace, so that in welcoming and supporting one another, we may glorify you. In the holy and loving name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
