Thu Jun 11-Knowing Who You Are And Whose You Are

Psalm 100 (CEB)

1 Shout triumphantly to the Lord, all the earth!
    Serve the Lord with celebration!
    Come before him with shouts of joy!
Know that the Lord is God—
    he made us; we belong to him.
    We are his people,
    the sheep of his own pasture.
Enter his gates with thanks;
    enter his courtyards with praise!
    Thank him! Bless his name!
Because the Lord is good,
    his loyal love lasts forever;
    his faithfulness lasts generation after generation.

Reflection

One of the greatest struggles people face is understanding who they are. We often define ourselves by our careers, accomplishments, possessions, relationships, or even our failures. When those things change or disappear, our sense of identity can become shaky. The world constantly tells us to create our own identity, but Scripture tells us something different. Our identity begins with God.

Psalm 100:3 gives us four powerful truths. First, the LORD is God. Before we can understand ourselves, we must understand who God is. God is the Creator, Sustainer, and Ruler of all things. God is not merely someone we turn to when we need help; God is the Lord of our lives and the One who gives meaning and purpose to our existence.

Second, God made us. We are not accidents or products of chance. God intentionally created each one of us and knows us completely. God knows our strengths and weaknesses, our gifts and our struggles. Because God made us, our worth is not determined by what we accomplish, how much money we earn, or what others think about us. Our value comes from being created in the image of God and loved by the One who made us.

Third, we belong to God. This answers the question of whose we are. Through God’s grace and love, we have been claimed as God’s own. In a world where people often feel isolated, forgotten, or rejected, there is great comfort in knowing that we belong to God. We are never abandoned, never overlooked, and never beyond God’s care.

Finally, we are God’s people, the sheep of God’s pasture. God is not a distant observer watching our lives from afar. God cares for us like a shepherd cares for the sheep entrusted to him. The shepherd guides, protects, and provides for the flock. In the same way, God leads us when we are uncertain, protects us when we are vulnerable, and provides for us when we are in need. We can trust God’s direction because we are always under God’s loving care.

When we truly know who we are and whose we are, it changes the way we face life. We no longer have to prove our worth to others. We do not have to be defined by our mistakes or failures. We do not have to carry every burden alone. Instead, we can live with confidence and peace, knowing that we are God’s people and that our Shepherd walks with us through every season of life.

Today, take a moment to remember your identity. Before you are an employee, employer, parent, spouse, friend, or neighbor, you are a child of God. You were created by God, you belong to God, and you are cared for by God. Whatever challenges you face today, let this truth anchor your heart: you know who you are because you know whose you are.

For Pondering and Prayer

When you think about who you are, what first comes to mind? Do you define yourself by your job or your role in your family? If that identity were to suddenly change, how would you respond? Would you still remain rooted and content in the truth that you are a child of God?

Prayer: Lord, thank You for creating me and claiming me as Your own. When I am tempted to ground my identity in the things of this world, remind me that my true identity is found in You. Help me live each day with confidence and peace, knowing that I am Your child and that You are my Shepherd. Guide my steps, strengthen my faith, and teach me to rest in Your loving care. Amen.
