Thu Sep 26 – A Mustard Seed of Faith

Matthew 9:2022 (NIV)

20 Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak. 21 She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.”

22 Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart, daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed at that moment.

Reflection

What was going through the mind of that woman? Obviously, she thought she might be healed. In her mind she said, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.”

At first, nothing happened as she touched the edge of  Jesus’ cloak. Jesus wasn’t aware of her until after she touched his cloak. Jesus turned and saw her, saying, “Take heart, daughter, “your faith has healed you.”

And at the moment the woman was healed.

Was the woman courageous or was she clinging to one last hope that she might be healed? I don’t know what she was thinking but Jesus knew, saying that it was her faith that healed her.

It was so important that Jesus told her it was her faith that healed her. It wasn’t anything superstitious, it was her faith, as weak as it was, that healed her. It was also important to me that Jesus said what he said. I don’t have to be a super spiritual person. I just need a mustard seed of faith. Unfortunately, I forget that much of the time and don’t ask to be healed.

But at least today I will remember. And I will ask to be healed.

For Pondering and Prayer

When I’m at the end of my rope I need to remember that I don’t need to be super spiritual. I need to remember that a mustard seed of faith is what heals me.

Prayer: Lord my Lord, always help me to remember that simple faith is all it takes, faith in you, my Savior. I don’t need to have great faith, simply faith in you. Amen.
