Lamentations 3:22-23 (CEB)

22 Certainly the faithful love of the Lord hasn’t ended; certainly God’s compassion isn’t through!
23 They are renewed every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

Reflection

If you’re anything like me, then you read these two verses and your brain jumped right into the famous hymn, “Great is Thy Faithfulness” by Thomas O. Chisholm:

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father
There is no shadow of turning with Thee
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not
As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be

Great is Thy faithfulness
Great is Thy faithfulness
Morning by morning new mercies I see
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me

These verses can be interpretated in two very different ways:

  1. That this day has been so great, God’s faithful love and compassion has been so great that it feels impossible for there to be any more left – yet tomorrow there will be more!
  2. That this day has felt completely void of God’s faithful love and compassion – but I will trust that that does not mean I will never feel it again. Tomorrow is a new day to feel God’s faithfulness.

Most of us have probably experienced each of these days at some point – days that are beautiful and fulfilling and joyous, and days that are long and heavy and painful. But no matter which interpretation your lived experience brings you to this text today, one thing remains the same – every morning is a new day, a fresh start.
