Tue May 5-God Cannot Be Contained

Acts 7:44-50 (CEB)

44 “The tent of testimony was with our ancestors in the wilderness. Moses built it just as he had been instructed by the one who spoke to him and according to the pattern he had seen. 45 In time, when they had received the tent, our ancestors carried it with them when, under Joshua’s leadership, they took possession of the land from the nations whom God expelled. This tent remained in the land until the time of David. 46 God approved of David, who asked that he might provide a dwelling place for the God of Jacob. 47 But it was Solomon who actually built a house for God. 48 However, the Most High doesn’t live in houses built by human hands. As the prophet says,

49 Heaven is my throne,
and the earth is my footstool.
‘What kind of house will you build for me,’ says the Lord,
‘or where is my resting place?
50 Didn’t I make all these things with my own hand?’

Reflection

Today’s passage is part of the speech, really a sermon, that Stephen is ultimately put to death for. In it, he boldly challenges the people’s understanding of the Temple and, more importantly, their understanding of God.

In the middle of this message, Stephen makes a statement that cuts straight to the heart of his listeners: “However, the Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands.” (Acts 7:48)

For those hearing this, the Temple was everything. It represented God’s presence, their identity, and their security. To them, God was closely tied to a place, a structure they could point to, manage, and protect. In many ways, the Temple had become an idol. But Stephen reminds them of something they had forgotten: God cannot be contained.

Stephen goes on to quote the prophet Isaiah, declaring that heaven is God’s throne and the earth is God’s footstool. In other words, no building, system, or structure could ever hold God.

So, what does this mean for us today?

There is no doubt that special “holy places” can help us feel closer to God. But we must understand that our connection to God is not limited to those places. God is everywhere, and we can connect with God at any time, not just on Sunday mornings in church or during designated spiritual routines.

It’s easy for us to fall into the trap of compartmentalizing our relationship with God, limiting God to certain times, places, or situations. But as Stephen warned his listeners, and as this passage reminds us today, God cannot be confined to a building, a schedule, or a moment of worship. God is present in every place, every situation, and every detail of our lives.

That means that God is just as present in our workplaces as God is in a church service. God is just as active in our challenges as God is in our victories. God is with us at all times; we simply need to acknowledge God’s presence and allow God to guide us and give us peace.

For Pondering and Prayer

  • Where I have been limiting God to certain parts of my life?
  • Do I truly live as if God is present in every moment?
  • What would it look like to give God full access to my life instead of partial control?

Prayer: Limitless God, give us the wisdom to understand that You are present in all places and that You desire a relationship with us. Help us to recognize Your presence and to surrender our lives fully to You. Soften our hearts so they are not hardened by the distractions and pressures of this world. Draw us closer to You, and remind us that without You, we are nothing. Teach us to trust You completely, so that we may experience the peace that surpasses all understanding that Your Word promises. We pray this in the beautiful name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
