Tue Oct 29-The Days Are Long, the Years Are Short

2 Peter 3:8 (CEB)

Don’t let it escape your notice, dear friends, that with the Lord a single day is like a thousand years and a thousand years are like a single day.

Reflection

There are certain moments and times when my kids were younger that I can clearly remember thinking to myself, “I need to cherish this time, I need to bottle it up and savor it,” because I knew it was fleeting. I felt it when they were babies and I was holding them, feeding them a bottle, or rocking them to sleep. I felt it when they were little kids and I was playing with them, reading them a bed time story, or tucking them in at night. Or even now, as they are teenagers who are becoming more and more independent, and are sometimes driving me crazy, I think to myself, “I need to cherish and enjoy this time, I can’t let the small things drive me too crazy,” because soon enough my kids will be leaving the nest and a new season of life will begin for both them and Andrea and I. When I look back on how quickly my kids have grown up, I can truly appreciate the saying, “the days may be long, but the years are short.”

It is with this perspective that I read 2 Peter 3:8 and try to ponder how God views the fleeting moments of our lives in the great expanse of eternity. Like a parent cherishing time with their child, God cherishes time with us and is present savoring every moment of our lives. From the small every day things to the big milestones, God cares about it all.

God, however, is not bound by time. God has always been and will always be. So, even if we see a particular season of our life coming to an end, we can take comfort in knowing that God has been there with us every step of the way. God is present in our life today, and God will always be there.  So, wherever we find ourselves today, let us enjoy this moment, and remember that although “the days may be long, the years are short.”

For Pondering and Prayer

Do you have a particular time in your life that you cherish the memories of? Do you see change coming in your life soon? Does this scare or encourage you? Have you talked to God or a loved one about this change and how you can best prepare for it?

Prayer: Timeless God, thank you for being present in our lives today and every day.  May we cherish this day and see the beauty in it.  May you give us the patience and wisdom to see that even as time passes us and things change, you are never changing and will our rock forever. Amen.
