Wed May 13-What Are We Asking God For?

John 16:24 (CEB)

Up to now, you have asked nothing in my name. Ask and you will receive so that your joy will be complete.

Reflection

This verse forces us to ask an important question: What can we ask for from God so that our joy will be complete?

We often think complete joy would come if God gave us: more money, easier circumstances, success, comfort, recognition, health, security, answers to every problem. None of these things are necessarily wrong to pray for. God cares about our needs, and Scripture tells us to bring all our requests to God. However, even when we receive these worldly things, the joy they provide is temporary. Jesus is calling his disciples, and us, to ask for something deeper.

The context of John 16 is incredibly important. Jesus is preparing His disciples for His death, resurrection, and the coming of the Holy Spirit. Their world is about to be shaken. Even though the ultimate victory will be won through Jesus’ resurrection, Jesus knows that his followers will face trials, suffering, and trouble in this world after His ascension to Heaven.

Jesus is teaching that true and complete joy is not found in favorable circumstances. It is found in deep relationship with God, a relationship that the troubles of this world cannot interfere with.

So, what can we ask for that leads to complete joy, regardless of the circumstances of this world? We can ask for: more of Christ, deeper fellowship with God, greater faith, a heart that loves what God loves, forgiveness and freedom from sin, wisdom to follow God, strength to endure trials, the presence of the Holy Spirit, an eternal perspective, a life that glorifies God in all that we do.

Ultimately, complete joy comes when our hearts desire God more than the worldly things we often believe will satisfy us. When God becomes our greatest desire, our joy begins to overflow in ways that circumstances cannot take away.

For Pondering and Prayer

  • What do you most often ask God for?
  • Are your prayers mainly focused on changing circumstances or deepening your relationship with God?
  • What would it look like for your relationship with God to become your greatest source of joy?

Prayer: Lord, teach me to seek You above everything else. Help me not to chase temporary happiness while neglecting the lasting joy that can only be found in Your presence. Give me a deeper desire for Christ, stronger faith, and a heart that delights in You. May my joy be made complete not by the things of this world, but by knowing You. Amen.
