Genesis 1:27 (CEB)

27 God created humanity in God’s own image,
in the divine image God created them,
male and female God created them.

Reflection

Does it amaze you that God created us humans in his image. That’s what it says in the first verse of Genesis 1:27.

Tradition has it that Moses is the author of Genesis. I’m guessing that Moses was amazed that God made us in His image too, because in the second verse he basically repeats himself, saying, “in the divine image God created them.”

And just so we wouldn’t be confused he added, “male and female God created them.”

So, the next time you are having a bad day, reread Genesis 1:27. How could anybody have a bad day knowing that God created us in His image.

But why do I believe it? Some days I act like I don’t. When I wrote devotionals for the newspaper someone asked me why I believe what I believe. Not an easy question to answer but a good question to ask.

Sometimes the answer changes for me.

I’ve looked at books on hermeneutics and am convinced that what the Bible says is true. I’m not saying I understand everything I’ve read, but enough to believe the Bible is true. Those places I don’t understand, I believe God will explain it later.

Chris Rice is one of my favorite Christian singers. He wrote a song called “Big Enough,” as is God big enough.

We sometimes have questions. And we need a God who is big enough to answer them. One scripture I often turn to is Mark 9:24.

In verse 22 Jesus asked a father how long a demon had taken over his son. The man said to Jesus, “But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”

Jesus replied, “‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”

And the man said, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

I’ve been like that man, asking Jesus to help me overcome my unbelief.”

I do believe—just not big enough.

I have to believe in eternal life. And I have to know that God provided a way for us to be saved.

That’s grace. So maybe it’s not too crazy to believe that we’ve been made in His image… “in the divine image God created them, male and female God created them.”

For Pondering & Prayer

Just imagine, we are made in his image. Imagine all that being made in his imagine means.

Prayer: Dear Lord, right from the creation of the world, you told us we were made in your image. But even when you created the world you knew you would do this. I need to always remember this. Amen.
