Matthew 7:24-27 (CEB)

24 “Everybody who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise builder who built a house on bedrock. 25 The rain fell, the floods came, and the wind blew and beat against that house. It didn’t fall because it was firmly set on bedrock. 26 But everybody who hears these words of mine and doesn’t put them into practice will be like a fool who built a house on sand. 27 The rain fell, the floods came, and the wind blew and beat against that house. It fell and was completely destroyed.”

Reflection

The beach I visited as a child had a widening path with mounds of sugary sand dunes that you crossed to get down to the water’s edge.  Of course, as a kid, I didn’t know to think about beach erosion, pollution, hurricanes or about rising sea levels in my beach town. I was a kid, and as such, I didn’t know that where the foundation of a home is built really does matter. Whenever I read this scripture, I remember that sandy beach where I could stand by the water with my feet carelessly sinking into the surrounding sand. Yet Jesus is not really giving us discourse on where our homes or people should be standing, is he?

Instead standing on the rock foundation that Jesus speaks of is important to the spiritual path we walk with God. Do we walk through life carelessly stepping without noticing where our steps go or without intention? Do we just stand in sinking sand without a plan? Or do we walk together with God –thinking and praying for guidance along the way? Yes, we walk with intention towards Jesus’ way. Even if all the world seems to be sinking in sand, we still walk with purpose. We walk knowing that we walk in God’s widening way.

For Pondering & Prayer

How do you walk with God intentionally? What spiritual practice(s) is/are your foundational practice that draws you closer to God’s widening way?  What is your story of sinking sand and how does that move you toward a closer relationship with Jesus?

Prayer: Loving God, thank you for your Son, Jesus. Help me to walk in His way and to be intentional along this path. Help me to stick to a foundation with you that keeps me and teaches me to be grounded in your truth. Amen.
