The fear of the Lord leads to life;
then one rests content, untouched by harm.
Reflection
The word “fear” typically has a negative connotation. If we are fearful of something, it is usually because we have had a negative experience with the thing we are fearful of. So why does the Bible tell us that we are to fear the Lord? How can fearing the Lord lead to wisdom, peace, and rest?
Webster’s Dictionary defines “fear” as “a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, or pain.” But it also defines fear as “reverential awe toward God.” In the Book of Proverbs, thought to have been written by King Solomon, the concept of fearing the Lord and how this leads to wisdom, peace, and rest is given particular focus. For example, Proverbs 1:7 states that “wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Proverbs 14:27 states that “the fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, turning people away from deathtraps.” And our verse for today, Proverbs 19:23, tells us that “the fear of the Lord Leads to life; then one rests content, untouched by harm.”
When we make fearing God, or having reverence and awe toward God, the top priority in our life, this fear will lead to a profound sense of wisdom, peace, and rest within our souls. And although the things of this world around us may be circling out of control, we can rest contently knowing that God is ultimately in control and God will redeem us.
