1 Thessalonians 5:16-22 (CEB)

16 Rejoice always. 17 Pray continually. 18 Give thanks in every situation because this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 19 Don’t suppress the Spirit. 20 Don’t brush off Spirit-inspired messages, 21 but examine everything carefully and hang on to what is good. 22 Avoid every kind of evil.

Reflection

1st Thessalonians is somewhat unique in being date verified by an inscription in the Temple of Apollos at Delphi, A.D. 51. Our scripture is described as part of Paul’s practical instructions for Christian Living sent to the church in Thessalonica.

The study bible I chose to refer to for today makes some helpful clarifications including calling the 7 verses a summary of Christian virtues. Being joyful is appropriate at all times. Praying continually is meant to mean persistently and regularly.  Thankfulness flows as a natural response to seeing God at work in our lives. We should walk by the Holy Spirit recognizing that scripture has a divine origin. Careful examination refers to the written word and carefully discerning what is preached.

The words of the Don Moen song “Be Strong and Take Courage” seem to be a way to apply our scripture to daily life. There are a number of available YouTube links if you would like to hear this beautiful song.

Be strong and take courage
Do not fear or be dismayed
For the Lord will go before you
And His light will show the way
Be strong and take courage
Do not fear or be dismayed

For the one who lives within you
Will be strong in you today
Why don’t you give him all of your fears?
Why don’t you let him wipe all of your tears?
He knows, He’s been through pain before
And He knows all that you’ve been looking for

So, be strong and take courage
Do not fear or be dismayed
For the Lord will go before you
And His light will show the way
Be Strong and take courage
Do not fear or be dismayed
For the one who lives within you
Will be strong in you today

Nothing can take you out of His hand
Nothing can face you can’t command
I know that you will always be
In His love, in His power you will be free

Be strong and take courage
For the one who lives within you
Will be strong in you today

What makes you feel strong in Christ?

Is the Spirit touching your heart to share the love you feel with someone else today?
