Fri Sep 13-The Courage to Trust

Psalm 27:11-14 (CEB)

11 Lord, teach me your way;
because of my opponents, lead me on a good path.
12 Don’t give me over to the desires of my enemies,
because false witnesses and violent accusers
have taken their stand against me.
13 But I have sure faith
that I will experience the Lord’s goodness
in the land of the living!

14 Hope in the Lord!
Be strong! Let your heart take courage!
        Hope in the Lord!

Reflection

Sometimes the courage we need is the courage to keep doing right. It’s easy to get discouraged in that. People will question our motives and intentions. They’ll be kind to our faces, but talk smack when we’re not around.

We’re often tempted to take the low road and give it right back, to take our revenge by being malicious and petty. They deserve it, don’t they?

When we feel that, today’s scripture offers an antidote: a prayer to stay on the straight and narrow. “Because of my opponents, lead me on a good path.” Don’t let us fall, Lord. Don’t let us stoop to the level of those who falsely accuse. Don’t let us give in to the haters.

In order to do that, we need to trust God to defend us. We don’t need to battle. We don’t need to fight. Don’t worry, we’ll see God’s favor and blessing this side of heaven. We just need the courage to trust!

For Pondering and Prayer

Is there a situation that you need to turn over to God, trusting your Creator to defend and care for you?

Prayer: Holy God, lead us on right paths today. When we are tempted to seek revenge, to defend ourselves, or to fight, grant us courage to put our whole trust in you. Amen.
