John 6:36-40 (CEB)

36 But I told you that you have seen me and still don’t believe. 37 Everyone whom the Father gives to me will come to me, and I won’t send away anyone who comes to me. 38 I have come down from heaven not to do my will, but the will of him who sent me. 39 This is the will of the one who sent me, that I won’t lose anything he has given me, but I will raise it up at the last day. 40 This is my Father’s will: that all who see the Son and believe in him will have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”

Reflection

When people want to make a point with you or really try to get you to believe in something, they often say “you can take that to the bank” or “you can bank on it!” Most of us have seen that banks aren’t always solid, and that most things in life are anything but certain. For some, even seeing isn’t believing.

Jesus is talking to the crowd who had witnessed the miracle of the feeding of the five thousand. Some people believed because they saw it happen, most people didn’t believe, but were there for the free food. Now they are asking for another sign so they can believe Jesus is the Messiah. So they are “seeing” yet not “believing.” Their lack of faith requires more proof. By not believing they have rejected Jesus who God has sent to bring them eternal life.

But, God has a plan. In spite of our inability to see and believe, God loves us so much that he will sacrifice his son Jesus to save us. God has chosen us and given us to Jesus. Our hearts are opened and we believe and come to Jesus and not one of us who are given to Jesus will be lost. Jesus died for us and we will be raised up on the last day to eternal life. You can bank on God’s Plan! This is God’s sovereign will for us. God will not fail us. God loves us, Jesus died for us, and we will be raised to eternal life!

For Pondering & Prayer

Have your eyes been opened to see the great love that God has for you? Have you experienced the joy that comes from knowing that you will be raised to eternal life? Take a few minutes now in silence to be with Jesus.

Prayer: Gracious God, my heart overflows with faith in Jesus. Thank you for opening my eyes to your love, and for the sacrifice that Jesus made so that my salvation is assured. I shall not be lost, but be raised, to live eternally with you. Amen.
