Tue Dec 12 The Son Is God’s Ultimate Messenger

Hebrews 1:1-4 (CEB)

1In the past, God spoke through the prophets to our ancestors in many times and many ways. In these final days, though, he spoke to us through a Son. God made his Son the heir of everything and created the world through him. The Son is the light of God’s glory and the imprint of God’s being. He maintains everything with his powerful message. After he carried out the cleansing of people from their sins, he sat down at the right side of the highest majesty. And the Son became so much greater than the other messengers, such as angels, that he received a more important title than theirs.

Reflection

If you have not had a chance to read Jeneene’s devotion from yesterday let me encourage you to do that. For me, that was a beautiful description of the “light of Christ” in the world.

Our scripture from Hebrews today is a perfect next reading; a majestic text which confirms the unique and definitive revelation of God’s Son. Jesus is heir of all things, the instrument (Wisdom) through which God created the world, the true light of God’s glory, and the exact representation of God. Jesus sustains all creation and made purification for our sins through his sacrificial death.

The song, “Mary Did You Know”, seems like a wonderful companion to these words. A beautiful rendition at this link.

In this season of reflection on hope, peace, love, and joy what do we do with this awe inspiring image of who Jesus is to us and for us? How do we apply scripture and meaning like this to our everyday lives?  Might you be willing to try a practical, and simple, process?

1. Verse. Write out the verse or passage.

2. Truth. Use your own words to state the truth of the verse.

3. Need. Honestly assess your own life in relation to the truth of Scripture. What area of need does God’s Word expose in your life?

4. Intent. State a specific change you want to implement in your area of need. Keep the action simple.

5. Checkup. State how you will accomplish the goal you have set. You may want to put a reminder on your calendar or share your application with a trusted friend who will hold you accountable.

If we use this tool, with confidence that God is conforming us to Christ’s image, the Spirit will complete what Jesus started. Thanks to the Navigators ministry that helps people grow in their relationship with Jesus for supplying this.

For Pondering & Prayer

A reality of life today is that there are things going on that can be terribly troubling, loss of home, lack of food and security, and lives in just the Middle East alone. As Jesus’ people, that hurts our hearts and makes us wonder what can be done. There are many unique little ways that we can contribute to making change but if there is one way to be truly strong and unified, is it not through shared commonality, with the family of Jesus and the Word?

Have you thought of asking God to help you with a situation that is particularly troubling? Is there someone with whom you can share your concern and together, be in prayer?

How can we continue to encourage each other to find a sense of awe and gratitude for the immeasurable love of God in our lives?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, shine your light on us, help us to walk in it. Keep us from self-seeking attitudes that reject your truth. Restore the joy of Your salvation to each of us so that we can experience the joy of Your presence. Amen.
